Fortune
Born Helena Dolph Jackson, she also goes by the names “Lady Luck” and “Fortune”.
These names were given to her in her military service for the extraordinary and unexplainable
phenomenon that simply no bullet seemed able to hit her. Being the daughter of one-time Marine
Commander Scott Dolph, she was raised in a strict military household, to which she herself
adhered to later in life and followed in her father’s footsteps to become a soldier. Her exotic
looks are unforgettable; a blend of dark tan skin with light green colored eyes and contrasting
blond hair, showing her lineage as being from somewhere in the South Pacific islands. Her father
bore the same striking features as well, which she inherited. Virtually nothing is known about her
mother, and likewise nothing is known about her early formative years as a child.
She led a normal life until in her twenties when her father was killed aboard the U.S.S.
Discovery. She joined the military afterwards driven mostly by the honor of knowing that her
father would have been proud. She was singled out and promoted for her one unique talent that
appeared over and over again in training: her miraculous luck. Fortune was then assigned to the
Navy’s anti-terrorist training unit, Dead Cell, where she met her husband, Colonel Reginald
Jackson, who was then head of Dead Cell. Always staying busy in Jackson’s life, he often related
his work to her, and she became very familiar with Dead Cell’s role and methods. She became
interested in Dead Cell and worked alongside Jackson, involving herself whenever he needed an
opinion or input.
In the year 2005, in the secrecy surrounding the Shadow Moses Incident, President
George Sears was rocked by controversy. He had been linked to the events on Shadow Moses
and resigned the presidency. Along with losing the Presidency, he lost control of the anti-terrorist
faction Dead Cell, which he had been Commander-In-Chief too. The leader of Dead Cell, Colonel
Jackson, was also linked to the inner sanctums of illegal military intelligence that Sears had a hand
in. Though he was almost certainly innocent, he was also seen by high government officials as a
burden, a mark of the disgrace that George Sears left on the presidency. The government
liquidated Dead Cell, thus erasing any mark of Sears’ mistakes in office. Colonel Jackson was
court-martialed and imprisoned on charges of corruption and misappropriation of funds. Dead
Cell was disbanded by a loss of funding by the government and a removal of any authority to
continue operations. Only in official documents were Dead Cell disbanded, though. Even after
they had been shut down, they still remained together. At first, they rallied for the release of
Jackson from imprisonment by staging massive protests and had some success. However, before
anything serious could come of it, Jackson died abruptly and mysteriously in prison. Fortune
blamed the government and called the death a cover-up. She never again trusted the government,
only allowing it to interfere with her when absolutely possible. George Sears stepped in, and his
own tale of betrayal by the U.S. government further angered Fortune. He then explained that it
was not exactly the U.S. government that had destroyed both of their lives, but a secret
puppetmaster behind the government which controlled everything in total secrecy. The name of
the group: The Patriots.
All her anger was channeled into revenge when she took the leadership role of Dead Cell,
which now included Solidus Snake full time, whose alias was the former George Sears. Now that
his presidency was over, he could focus on the destruction of his enemies - The Patriots! What
more, Fortune found out from Solidus, who had previously been in contact with Revolver Ocelot,
that an infamous mercenary known as Solid Snake had been responsible for the death of her
father, Marine Commander Scott Dolph, the same person who allegedly sunk the U.S.S.
Discovery. Revolver Ocelot had now washed his hands clean of the murderous betrayal and laid
the blame entirely on Solid Snake, for Ocelot had been the true killer of her father. Solidus and
Fortune then began staging true terrorist attacks on the civilian population in order to both earn
the attention of The Patriots and lure Solid Snake into a confrontation. Once again through
Ocelot, Solidus heard about The Patriots’ plans for a new Metal Gear that was being developed
right under their very noses; The Hudson Bay offshore cleanup facility known as The Big Shell.
It couldn’t come at a better time. Something of this size would surely attract all the major key
players, and Dead Cell chose it as their time to strike a crippling blow that would leave The
Patriots vulnerable.
The siege went as planned and The Big Shell was threatened with certain destruction; The
Patriots bought the bait. Things grew more heated when, after the siege had taken place, an
intruder was discovered. Fortune armed herself with her shoulder-slung custom Lockheed
RG-590 Experimental Aircraft Rail Cannon, which she had been saving for this occasion and went
to hunt down the intruder, only to find it was not Solid Snake. Angry that she might not avenge
her father’s death by killing his final enemy, Fortune’s outlook was apathetic. Her apathy was her
strength, and the more miserable she felt, the more destructive her behavior. Her misery was so
complete that she felt she’d lost her sense of purpose; she wanted to die, but couldn’t seem to be
able to since no bullet could find it’s mark on her body and she could not bring herself to thought
of suicide. Her posthumous existence changed for the better, however, when she discovered
there was yet another intruder inside The Big Shell. This remained her only hope to cling to life
now. Predictably, Solid Snake could not keep away from the ominous portents of The Big Shell
and Solidus Snake correctly identified him as the second intruder. Slowly, The Big Shell was
gradually wrested from the hands of Dead Cell by the intervening forces opposing them. As each
member of Dead Cell failed to stop the onslaught of the invading enemy, the remaining forces
evacuated themselves into Arsenal Gear, cutting off the enemy from reaching them. It proved to
be too late, and as the intruders infiltrated Arsenal Gear, Fortune found herself face to face with
her most hated enemy, Solid Snake. The battle against Snake was one-sided the whole time,
Fortune’s luck proving to be too much for her nemesis. The battle ended not in death, which was
more honorable, but in a humiliating capture. Fortune brought the handcuffed Snake to Ocelot
and Solidus, who had subdued the other infiltrator. Only then did Revolver Ocelot reveal his true
traitorous nature. When he had explained his perfect role of double agent he had played against
everyone else in order to help The Patriots, Fortune attacked him. Unfazed, Ocelot drew his own
pistol and put a single shot into her chest. Bewildered at her first ever battle wound, she
wondered how it was that she had been shot when before no bullet could even touch her. Ocelot
explained that this was due to superior electromagnetics which had controlled all her “luck” in
every single battle situation before now. Developed by the Patriots and administered to Fortune
and Ocelot both, he had simply switched hers off, allowing him an open shot. Revolver Ocelot
then escaped the scene in Metal Gear Ray, leaving Fortune’s body behind while an angry Solidus
looked on.
